Gallery& Workspace《SHIGEI-NOIE》
Has Come Into Existence
~Creators in Different Genres Send Messages
outside Innoshima Island~
My name is Shun YOSHINO. I am a potter. I immigrated here to Innoshima last year.
Until now, by request, I taught at pottery class of community centers and local businesses. I also gave career guidance at Innoshima-Minami Junior High School. I sometimes attended various events. Those who wanted to contact with one another through pottery helped and supported me.
Now, here in Innoshima, like-minded creators in different genres gathered and have opened “SHIGEI-NOIE” --- gallery & workspace.
As more visitors called at my house, pottery studio, I came to want another space---gallery and workspace. When I was looking for it, I found an old farm bam of two -stories which had not been used yet. The owner accommodated with good grace to use it as gallery & workspace, if it helps me promote development of the island.
Seeing inside of the building, I thought it was wide enough to share the space. So I suggested two of friends to join me. I encountered with friends in Innoshima in a year. Rumi OKANO is a designer whose studio name is “Pcalus.” She ordered me to make coffee cups. She was the first creator I met in Innoshima. And Shuji MUKAI is a metal molding operator. I asked him to manufacture the signboard of my pottery studio, “Studio ICHIE.” He is a welder and likes “manufacturing.”
With our team effort, we will challenge to promote the development of the island.
I started to renovate the bam in March of this year and opened the gallery half a year later. The renovation project was challenging for me because of a small budget. In such a situation, A lot of support persons helped me.
A skilled plasterer I got acquainted with at pottery class proposed me to do the work with only a material cost. All the inside walls were painted with white plaster which art works contrast favorably with. Orange-colored appearance was repainted muted black. Thanks to a lot of help, the renovation was accomplished.
I named the gallery “SHIGEI-NOIE,” while “Shigei-No-Ie” means “A house in Shigei” in Japanese. Here, “Noie” means “ Aggregate of light and hope” in Germany. According to the name, I would like to make the comfortable place where visitors laugh together, bother over, talk dreams with each other, and create the future from now.
I never forget kindnesses and I remember a lot of stories and smiles when I turn around year-to-date. I targeted connecting with others in this island for a year. My day job is actually to make works. So it is significant for me to do my work in earnest with ambition, not halfway, thinking “I can do it only now” everyday.
Now that I got a place where I can send works and messages, I would like to devote myself to making works and send out attractiveness of the island outside Innoshima.
I start to sell my works at “SHIGEI-NOIE” in October.
Recently, owing to announcements of the TV and the newspapers, the number of off-island visitors is increasing. I am happy if I can provide them with works filled with rich climate of the island.
I hope that our possibilities and the place of exchanges will expand based in “SHIGEI-NOIE.”.
